CLAPPERS LANE CROSSING UPDATE – Network Rail Southern Region February 2026
Making Clappers Lane safer: New Miniature Stop Lights coming soon
Network Rail is getting ready to install new Miniature Stop Lights (MSLs) at Clappers Lane level crossing, helping the community use the crossing safely once again.
The crossing was temporarily closed on 23rd January 2025 after repeated and extremely serious incidents of misuse. In just two weeks, there were four separate cases of people straying onto the track, including individuals walking along the line and playing games on the foot crossing as trains approached. With the third rail carrying a powerful, always‑live electrical current, the risks were simply too great, and closing the crossing immediately was the only safe option.
To allow the crossing to reopen, we’re installing Miniature Stop Lights, simple red‑and‑green signals, with an audible tone that makes it clear when it is safe to cross. These lights are designed to be easy to understand and to help users make safer choices around the railway.
Work to install the new equipment is due to begin on 16th February 2026. Once installed and fully tested, we expect the system to go live in March. Until then, access across the railway at this point will remain temporarily restricted.
Our level crossing manager and project team will be available throughout the works to listen, answer questions, and respond to any concerns.
Once the new MSLs are in operation, users will see bright red and green lights and hear an audible warning when a train is approaching. Before switching them on, we will carefully check the sound levels to ensure the warnings are clear for users without causing unnecessary disruption for neighbours. As with similar installations elsewhere, we will continue to monitor and fine‑tune the volume after the system is in use.
We are grateful to everyone who has shared feedback and helped shape this safety‑led solution. By installing MSLs at Clappers Lane, we are taking an important step towards reopening the crossing safely and reducing the risk of further dangerous incidents.
