Your Ferring Parish Councillors –

Cllr. Carole Robertson (Chair)

Carole Robertson retired 7 years ago after 34 years working for the Environment Agency and Southern Water.  She worked mainly in Flood Defence, Emergency Planning and  Incident Management.

Carole joined the parish council in 2008 and was elected Chairman in 2010. She is a firm believer in the importance of Parish Council’s and their role in local democracy. The production of the Ferring Neighbourhood Plan has been the biggest single piece of work the parish council has ever undertaken and probably the most influential in terms of the future for Ferring residents.

Living locally for over 50 years from primary school days in Rustington and retired now, my working background has been primarily in Financial Services Operational and Project Management.

I am a member of Ferring Conservation Group, Ferring History Group, St. Andrew’s Church and with a connection to Ferring Baptist Church. I like to travel, especially to places of scenic or historic interest. I have enjoyed travelling in the UK, the wider European continent, Brazil and the Middle/Far East.

I joined the Parish Council in 2011 when ‘Localism’ was being implemented as a key government policy with its potentially significant impact on local communities and councils. My desire was (and remains) to help protect Ferring from unsuitable developments and to support the conservation of the village.

My wife, Xiaoyan, and I are passionate about our local environment and the special community and friends we share in Ferring.

I am a retired Project Manager IEng,FIET,DipMan(Open) with responsibilities for the design and development of electronic equipment in the Aviation and Oil Industries.

My wife and I were born in Kent and have lived in West Sussex with our 2 children for over 35 years, the last 16 years being in Ferring. I have been a Ferring Parish Councillor for 13 years and thoroughly enjoy the challenges of trying to maintain Ferring as a nice place to live. I have previously been a Special Constable in Kent and Littlehampton and also carried out volunteer tutoring at Littlehampton community school.

My wife and I are making the most of our retirement by travelling,  ballroom and sequence dancing.

I moved to Ferring in January 2014 having previously lived in Rustington some years ago when my children were young. Having moved inland to accommodate jobs and schools, my husband and I were delighted to be able to move back to the coast once the family had all flown the nest!

Prior to my retirement three years ago, I was Headteacher of a secondary school in East Sussex for 12 years which included a period as Executive Headteacher of a primary school.

I joined the Council as I am keen to make a contribution to my local community and play my part in working with colleague councillors in the best interests of the residents of Ferring.

I moved to Ferring in 2017, with my Wife Mary, in order to be closer to our family and we have found it refreshing to live in such a friendly and community focussed village.  I retired from the British Army in 2012 having completed 38 years’ service in the Royal Engineers.  During my career I had a wide variety of jobs in both Military and Civil Engineering and facilities management.  I now consider myself to be semi-retired and currently work as a freelance environmental management consultant.

My spare time interests generally centre on spending time with my family and training/exercising our two dogs in a variety of activities.

I joined the Parish Council in 2019 as I wanted to become actively involved in the local community and to help to develop it for the future whilst retaining the culture and ethos of village life.  I feel strongly that all should have a voice in local issues and that a balanced view should be taken to achieve the best results for all the residents of this wonderful village.
